The Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages seminar trains you to be an English language teacher.

During the instruction portion of this course, you can expect input on topics relevant to English teaching for a Christian mission context. The classes are interactive to cater for different learning styles and model a variety of teaching methods. Small groups are often used to facilitate and inspire discussions and help with processing the content of the course.

What you'll experience during the seminar

Develop godly teaching characteristics

In Paul's letter to Titus, he says that an overseer must be above reproach. As teachers, we should also be above reproach. Throughout the TESOL Seminar, God's character is examined so that we can reflect His character to those we work with and teach.

Be equipped for a purpose-filled call

This course is very practical, developing a variety of skills for a missionary call involving English teaching.

Learn to teach even with limited resources

In many missions situations there may be few resources available. You will learn how to create your own teaching aids for a variety of situations.

The Practicum

Hands-On Experience

Practicum is when the student becomes the teacher. It is designed to give every TESOL graduate hands-on experience in a real language classroom. Classes are taught in teams, and evaluations are given by both peers and TESOL instructors alike. Many life-changing friendships have been made in our Practicum classrooms, a testament to the power of teacher-student relationships and the promise of every TESOL graduate's future as a true world-changer

Highlights during the practicum phase.

Multicultural Situations

As a multicultural city, here in Perth we tend to draw ESL students from a wide variety of nations. Many are refugees, backpackers from Asia and Europe, migrants as well as students studying in the city.

Discipling Nations through English Teaching

Finding topics for the students to talk about in their conversation classes can open doors to discuss biblical principles that can transform thinking in different spheres of society.

“I can do this!”

The practical nature of this course helps you to gain confidence in teaching. Many times we hear students say, “I can do this!”
