The Medical Discipleship Training School is for anyone interested in health care and missions - whether you're a medical professional wanting to use your skill in a real and relevant way, or if you don't have medical skills and want to reach out practically.
We start off with three months of lecture phase: the focus of this time is on personal application of truth and response to the character of God. It is designed to give you a biblical worldview, to train you in using health care as a tool in missions, to enable you to live more like Jesus and to identify your unique gifts and purpose as you pursue God's call on your life.
The lecture phase facilitates incredible growth in and out of the classroom. It's about doing the journey with friends. You'll have the opportunity to engage in weekly small groups, workshops, meals with our YWAM family and experience the City of Perth!
Being a follower of Jesus means learning to look like Him, think like Him, and to know His heartbeat. We focus on this through teaching, small groups, community life, and one-on-one input. Expect to be challenged in your worldview on everything from your personal life to health care. Let God rock your world!
Did you know: 2.5 million children die every year from diseases that would have been prevented if they’d known to wash their hands. We’ll look at things like this every week, get to know what international health needs are and what God’s heart is for them. You'll be equipped with knowledge and skill to meet them.
Get hands-on as you learn specialised health skills to use on outreach! Weekly workshops will cover things such as children's checks, vital signs, Fluoride treatment, visual acuity, clinic set-up, health education, interviewing a patient and more! These skills will prove essential when running clinics on outreach!
Outreach is about taking what we have learned on lecture phase and putting it into practise! This year we're headed to the city of Manila, Philippines. During your outreach you will be a part of using mobile medical clinics, dramas, community service, Bible reading, evangelism, and pretty much anything else we can use to show the love of God. Once teams arrive, you will receive hands-on training and application of what you've already learned about how to run clinics in a developing setting. Medical professionals will learn to use their skills in missions. Anyone without a medical background will learn basic skills to come alongside them in clinics. After the first few weeks you’ll be equipped to run the medical clinics along with your staff!
Get out there and share the incredible news of the gospel – whether it’s the rush of sharing Jesus with someone for the first time or seeing someone healed in a mobile clinic, you will see God do incredible things as we respond to His call to GO! From mobile clinics in a rural village to basic health teachings in an inner-city slum, anything could happen on outreach!
A clinic could be an organised set-up inside a building, sitting on a straw mat under a tree, or putting all your supplies in a backpack and hiking up a mountain to visit homes in a village. Sometimes it’s going door to door offering to check people’s blood pressures. Whatever it ends up looking like, you will be a part of providing health care in formal and/or informal settings.
Often the key to improving the health of a community is as simple as teaching them. And what better way than teaching them to teach others how to improve their health? Remember those 2.5 million children we mentioned before? You will be a part of preventing death and disease by training trainers in simple health care.
