PHOTOGRAPHY!

Adventures in meeting people

Recently, the SFM took to the streets of Perth and learned to see our city and her people through God’s eyes and also through our cameras. The students had a great time connecting to people in new ways. Here are some of their testimonies:

We had to go to the city of Perth and ask random people if we could take their photo. I took a ton of photos and got to be ministered to and minister to beautiful faces of God. In our Unity week, our teacher said, "God instructed us to not make an image of himself because he had already made one, it’s the person sitting next to you." I met so many faces that showed me how much he loves people! From telling a 96-year-old woman how beautiful she is and have tears come to her eyes to encouraging a man walking far from God, I was able to feel God's love. Great week!

This was a really fun week of experience new ways to take photos. We got a lot of good teaching as well as practice in different environments. It was all about trying new things, and not be afraid of failing. What I liked most about the week was to go down in the city. It was almost like a treasure hunt to find interesting people and ask them to be models for your portrait. It was also a good way to get to know people and hear their story. To connect they're story with the portrait was one of my favorite assignments. It’s an interesting challenge and it creates a new understanding and life to the picture. It’s all about creating the light and setting you want, finding the person and capturing the right moment, it was fun!

Having completed photography classes before, the lectures were a great refreshment of the theory and technical aspects involved in taking photos. Once lectures were complete we hit the streets and put it all into action! I had a lot of fun approaching people to ask if they would like to be my model, and found that along with capturing great portrait shots, I was invited into people's lives, hearing their stories and having the opportunity to share mine.

The SFM is heading off to Nepal for outreach now, where we hope to put this same learning into practice a new environment full of people who are very different and yet loved by the same God with the same intensity.
